Course Focus
The Postgraduate Programme in Renewable Energy (PPRE) has been offered by the Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg since 1987. About 450 students from over 85 countries (particularly from Africa, Asia, Central and South America, but also from Germany and other industrialized countries) have successfully completed this 18 month degree programme. The overarching objective of PPRE is to teach students the fundamental principles and applications of renewable energy sources; special attention is paid to the possibilities for application in developing countries. Technical focuses include: teaching the physical foundations of renewable energy systems, technical implementation and economic conditions for the use of renewable energies, practical testing of components, decentralized energy supply systems, analysis and planning, concrete decentralized energy supply projects (case studies), contacts with firms and institutions in the area of utilizing renewable energy sources. Graduate career prospects are currently very good, and not just in Germany. The market for renewable energies is growing. German companies are increasingly active at home and internationally. At the moment, graduates of the master’s programme in Renewable Energy are especially active in engineering and planning offices, as well as in research institutions. Additionally, there are many opportunities in international organizations and projects. Some graduates are also self-employed. In the meantime, a sort of global internship and job exchange in the area of renewable energy has developed, to a large extent because of the programme’s numerous international contacts and relationships, as well as because of its active alumni network. More and more students and graduates of the programme are profiting from this.
