Course Focus
The four-semester M.Sc. programme emphasises a firm foundation in economic analysis and quantitative methods to address real-world policy issues related to agriculture, food and the environment. Globalisation, sustainability, poverty, food security, food safety, agricultural policy reform and rural development are typical issues that are being analysed using innovative methodologies. A course semester consists of five thematic modules, each ending with a written or oral exam. In addition to compulsory modules, there is a wide choice of electives. Classroom work is supplemented with computer exercises, discussion sessions, research seminars and case studies. Modules are organised and taught by Hohenheim professors who have broad experience in international research. Students also benefit from Hohenheim’s active links with academic partners world- wide. Guest speakers from partner universities as well as research, development and policy institutions cover additional topics and thus enrich the curriculum with special fields of expertise. After three course semesters, the last six months are reserved for the M.Sc. thesis, which often involves primary data collection abroad. The thesis can pursue empirical or theoretical questions related to ongoing research projects, but students’ own initiatives and ideas are also welcome.
